What you will need

  • 100gm skein 14-16 ply wool
  • Three 15mm knitting needles
  • Darning needle
  • Thread

Cast on 36 stitches. Knit 4 rows then stockinette stitch (knit one row, purl one row) until the length is 23cm, small size, or 27cm, large.

When you’ve reached the desired length, knit 18 stitches and fold the bonnet in half so the needles lie alongside each other. Use the third needle to double cast off by picking up one stitch from each needle and casting off together. This will join the bonnet at the back, creating a slightly raised seam that gives the bonnet its pointy peak.

Cut six 70cm strands of wool. Knot together at one end, plait the yarn and tie. Make another using the same method. Trim close to the knot at one end, and with a longer fringe at the other.

Push the closely trimmed end of one plait through the bottom corner of the brim; repeat on other side. Stitch in place.
