What you will need:
- 45 x 50g balls of 8ply wool in five different colours: Aquamarine (C1) x 9, Bright Teal (C2) x 9, Soft Jade (C3) x 9, Deep Peacock (C4) x 9, Bird’s Egg Blue (C5) x 9
- 4mm-5mm needles depending on your tension
- 3.75mm x 80cm circular needle to make up
- 5 x stitch holders
Note: This blanket can be made up with garter stitch or reverse garter as the right side. Reverse garter stitch will show the join between colours as a line of contrasting stitches, which can be decorative.
Cast on 25sts in C1 (each band is approximately 30cm wide). Work in Garter Stitch until the band measures 1800cm from cast-on edge, counting your rows carefully as each band must have exactly the same number of rows. Do not cast off but instead transfer stitches to a stitch holder.
Repeat with C2, C3, C4 and C5 to create 4 more bands. 3 Steam each band very lightly and pull into shape.Repeat with C2, C3, C4 and C5 to create 4 more bands. Steam each band very lightly and pull into shape.
To join the bands:
First lay them out in sequence from C1 to C5. Then starting with inside edge of Band A, use a 3.75mm needle to knit up the end stitch of each row for the length of the band. Do the same along the adjacent edge of Band B. With the right side facing you, and using your original needle, use yarn in C2 to three – needle cast off the bands together. Use the same procedure to join each band to the one next to it.
To knit the side bands:
Using a 3.75mm needle and yarn in C4, knit up a stitch every row down one long side of the blanket. With right side facing you and with your original needles, garter stitch 6 rows. Cast off loosely on the wrong side and use a pin to hold the last stitch. Repeat using C5 for the other side.
To knit the top and bottom band:
Use 3.75mm needles and C1 yarn, knit up 4 stitches from the top edge of each side band, knit up 24 stitches from each band and 1 stitch at each join then garter stitch 20 rows (each band measures approximately 10cm). Cast off loosely on the wrong side and secure the end. Repeat using C3 for the bottom band.
